Ontogeny is the study of how a living thing grows.

It tracks every change from a tiny egg to an adult. This includes how the body grows and how the mind develops.

All life follows a set of steps. First, fertilization happens. This is when a sperm joins an egg. This event starts the life of a new organism. Next comes cleavage. This is a way for the single egg to divide into many cells. These cells form a hollow ball called a blastula.

After that, the ball forms layers through gastrulation. In humans, there are three germ layers. These layers act like building blocks. The endoderm is the inner layer. It makes the stomach and lungs. The mesoderm is the middle layer. It makes the heart, bones, and muscles. The ectoderm is the outer layer. It makes the skin and the nervous system.

Finally, organogenesis happens. This is the way organs and tissues are made. In animals with backbones, a tube forms to make the brain and spine. This is called neurulation. Each species has its own unique path to becoming an adult.
