Celestial cartography is the science of mapping the sky. This includes mapping stars, galaxies, and other objects in space.

It is a special branch of cartography, which is the study of maps. People also use a science called astrometry to help. Astrometry measures the exact location of stars and planets.

This science helps us understand how the sky is shaped. It is a very important tool for anyone studying space.

To make a good map, scientists need a star table. A star table is a list that shows where stars are located.

Mapping begins by measuring the position and light of objects. In the past, people used their eyes and a tool called a quadrant. A quadrant helps measure angles in the sky. Later, people used sextants with lenses to make light look larger. Today, we use computer-automated space telescopes to do this work. These tools allow us to build huge databases of stars.

People have been mapping the heavens for a very long time. In the 15th century BC, an Egyptian tomb had a star chart on the ceiling.

In the year 1092, Su Song created printed star maps in China. These maps even showed the correct position of the pole star. During the Renaissance, many people wrote books called Uranographia. This word comes from Greek words meaning "sky" and "to write." These early maps helped both amateur and professional astronomers.

Many famous people created important star lists throughout history. Around the year 150, Ptolemy made a list of 1,028 stars. In 1627, the Rudolphine Tables listed 1,005 stars based on Tycho Brahe's work. Johannes Hevelius made a list of 1,564 stars in 1690. By 1729, John Flamsteed mapped more than 3,000 stars. In 1903, Friedrich Wilhelm Argelander helped map about 460,000 stars. These numbers show how much our knowledge has grown.

Mapping the sky links the stars to the maps we use on Earth. Just as we use maps to find a street, astronomers use them to find a galaxy.

You can even use this science on your smartphone today. There are many apps like Stellarium or Star Walk to help you. These digital tools use the same ideas as old star atlases. They turn the big, dark sky into a clear picture. Now, anyone can explore the heavens from their own backyard.
