Cauterization

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cauterization is a medical way to treat the body using heat. Doctors use it to burn a small part of the body. This helps them to remove a growth or close off a part of the body. Most often, it is used to stop bleeding. It can also help to minimize harm like infections when antibiotics are not available. While it was once a common way to treat wounds, we now know it can increase infection risks. This happens because the heat causes more tissue damage. This damage can create a place where bacteria grow more easily.

There are different ways this heat works in the body. One way is called electrocautery. This process uses a metal probe that is heated by an electric current. The heat travels through the metal to the tissue. A doctor can use a continuous wave of electricity to cut through soft tissue. They can also use an intermittent wave to coagulate the tissue. Coagulate means to change the tissue so it stops bleeding. This can be done in two main ways. In unipolar cautery, the current flows through one small electrode. In bipolar cautery, the current passes between two tips on a tool.

People have used cauterization for a very long time. It has been used to stop heavy bleeding since ancient times. The Edwin Smith Papyrus and the Hippocratic Corpus both describe this process. In ancient Greece, doctors used it to control bleeding during surgery. Leonides of Alexandria even used it to treat breast tumors. In the Muslim world, scholars like Al-Zahrawi and Avicenna wrote about it too. Even the Babylonian Talmud from 500 AD mentions the use of a hot iron. Many different cultures, including the ancient Arabs and Persians, used this technique.

Today, doctors use specific tools and chemicals for this work. Chemical cautery uses substances like silver nitrate to treat skin lesions. Silver nitrate often comes in a stick that looks like a large match. Another chemical is cantharidin, which is an extract from the blister beetle. It is used to treat warts. For nosebleeds, doctors might use lasers or liquid nitrogen. Sometimes they use silver nitrate after a local anesthetic to numb the pain. These modern tools are often better than chemicals. Chemicals can sometimes leak into parts of the body they were not meant to touch.

Understanding cauterization helps us see how medicine has changed. In the past, people used heated lances or knives. Even as recently as the 20th century, some Bedouins used burned plant roots for medicine. Now, we use electricity and lasers to be much more precise. This precision helps doctors target only the area that needs treatment. We use these tools for many things, like removing warts or treating nosebleeds. By using electricity instead of just hot metal, we can control the heat much better. This makes the procedure more effective for the patient.
