These devices help doctors treat diseases or perform surgery. They can be inserted into many parts of the body. This includes body cavities, vessels, or even the brain. Some catheters are soft and flexible. Others are made to be quite stiff for specific jobs. If a catheter stays inside the body, it is called an indwelling catheter.

Some stay for a short time, while others are permanent.

Catheters work in many different ways to help a person. They can drain liquids, such as urine from the bladder. They can also deliver important fluids or gases into the body. For example, a tracheal tube can give oxygen to the lungs. Doctors use them to give medicine or nutrition through veins. Some catheters even help with imaging. Doctors inject a liquid called a radiocontrast agent to see blood vessels on a screen.

People have used tubes for many centuries. Ancient Egyptians made catheters from reeds. The Romans and Greeks used wood or precious metals.

In 1752, Benjamin Franklin invented a flexible metal catheter. He made it for his brother, John, who had bladder stones. Franklin's design used metal segments joined by a wire. Later, in 1844, Claude Bernard used a catheter on a horse. In 1929, Werner Forssman performed central venous catheterization. This important work helped him win a Nobel Prize in 1959.

Modern catheters are made from many different materials. Many are made of polymers, which are types of plastics. Common materials include silicone rubber, nylon, and polyurethane. Silicone is very popular because it does not react with body fluids. Some catheters are even layered with stainless steel to make them stronger. They might have a lubricious coating to make them slippery. This coating helps the tube slide into the body with less friction. These details help doctors use the right tool for the right job.

Using a catheter is a very important part of modern healthcare. You might see them used in a hospital to help someone breathe. They are also used in surgeries to guide tiny balloons or stents. However, doctors must be very careful when using them. Any object placed in the body carries a risk of infection. Bacteria can use a catheter like a superhighway to enter the bloodstream. This is why keeping them clean and using new ones is so vital.
