A cathedral is a specific type of church that serves as the central hub for a religious district. This district is known as a diocese, an area under the administrative authority of a leader called a bishop.

Because the bishop uses this church as their official headquarters, it holds a higher place in the church hierarchy than a standard parish church. The term is most common in Christian denominations that use an episcopal hierarchy. This includes the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican churches, as well as some Lutheran traditions.

The identity of a cathedral is tied to a physical object called a cathedra. This is the bishop's official throne or chair.

The word itself comes from the Greek word "kathedra," which means a seat or a base. In ancient times, a chair placed on a raised platform, or dais, was a symbol of a teacher or a judge. By using a cathedra, a bishop signals their dual role as a teacher of the faith and a governor of their diocese.

While the presence of this throne makes a cathedral, the size of the building does not. A cathedral can be a small building, though many are large because they must hold major celebrations for the whole diocese.

There are several different types of cathedral designations within the Catholic tradition. A pro-cathedral is a church used temporarily as a cathedral. This usually happens if the main cathedral is being repaired or is still under construction.

A co-cathedral is a second cathedral in a single diocese. This might occur if two former dioceses merge or if a territory is so large that a second location is needed.

There is also a proto-cathedral, which is the former cathedral of a see that has been moved. It is important to note that some very famous buildings, like St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, are not actually cathedrals.

The history of the cathedral began to change significantly in the 4th century. Before this time, there were no true cathedrae. Bishops typically presided over worship by standing on a raised platform called a pulpitum.

In the year 313, the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great adopted Christianity and initiated the Peace of the Church. This shifted how bishops functioned in society. They began to adopt the symbols and dignity of Roman public magistrates.

Instead of just standing, they began to sit on thrones within large, rectangular halls called basilicas.

One of the earliest examples of this new style is found near the Adriatic Sea. The Cathedral of Aquileia contains remains of two parallel halls from between the years 313 and 319.

These halls were connected by a smaller cross-hall, which may have been part of the bishop's residence, or episcopium. The site features rich mosaic pavements, including scenes of Jonah and the Whale.

While early models sometimes used two halls, the single-basilica model eventually became the most common way to build a cathedral.

Cathedrals appear in many different architectural styles across the globe. The Etchmiadzin cathedral in Armenia is believed to be the oldest cathedral in the world.

Today, cathedrals are found in nearly every part of the world due to centuries of missionary activity. Starting in the 16th century, many new dioceses were established in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Because of migration and new converts, it is common to see multiple cathedrals from different denominations in a single city. These buildings remain vital centers for religious life, serving as places for major liturgy, music, and community gathering.
