Casimir IV Jagiellon was a central figure in 15th-century European politics.

He served as the Grand Duke of Lithuania starting in 1440. In 1447, he also became the King of Poland. His leadership helped the Jagiellonian dynasty become a leading royal house in Europe. Under his rule, Poland and Lithuania functioned as a powerful dual state. This era saw the two nations become significant players in international relations. His reign helped narrow the gap between Poland and Western Europe.

Casimir's early life was marked by political controversy and family scandal. He was the third son of King Władysław II Jagiełło and Sophia of Halshany. Because Sophia was much younger than the King, some people questioned Casimir's legitimacy. Rumors of infidelity led to a legal investigation and the arrest of two ladies-in-waiting. To resolve the matter, the King held a court for Sophia. She took a formal oath of innocence, known as an iuramentum purgatorium. The charges were eventually dismissed, especially since Casimir physically resembled his father.

Casimir rose to power due to a sudden political vacuum in Lithuania. In 1440, the death of Sigismund Kęstutaitis left the Grand Duchy without a leader. Lithuanian magnates, led by Jonas Goštautas, supported the thirteen-year-old Casimir for the throne. This move caused friction with Polish nobles who wanted more control over Lithuania. The Polish side feared losing influence over their eastern partner. However, Casimir's brother, Władysław III, was busy in Hungary and the Balkans. This allowed Casimir to solidify his independent rule in Lithuania.

During his time in Lithuania, Casimir worked to balance local rights with royal authority.

He ensured that Lithuanian nobles had equal rights to the Polish szlachta. He also promised not to appoint Polish officials to Lithuanian offices. The region of Samogitia gained the right to elect its own elder. Casimir was also the first native Roman Catholic Grand Duke baptized at birth. He worked closely with the Council of Lords to manage the state.

After a three-year period of political negotiation, Casimir was elected King of Poland in 1447.

His rule was defined by the challenge of managing two distinct political entities. Poland was a more homogenous Catholic society, while Lithuania was a multicultural, Eastern Orthodox dominion. Casimir used diplomacy to harmonize the interests of both nobilities. He relied on families like the Tęczyński to mediate between the crown and the upper class. In Lithuania, the Grand Chancellor Mikołaj II Radziwiłł helped strengthen ties with the Polish Crown.

One of the most significant achievements of his reign was the Thirteen Years' War.

This conflict lasted from 1454 to 1466 against the Teutonic Knights. The war began after the Prussian Confederation asked Casimir for help against the Order. Casimir promised to make the rebellious Prussian regions a protectorate of Poland. The Polish army saw major success at the Battle of Świecino in 1462. A decisive naval victory occurred at the Battle of Vistula Lagoon. These wins led to the Second Peace of Thorn, which brought Royal Prussia under Polish sovereignty.

Casimir also managed complex foreign relations and economic growth.

He married Elisabeth of Austria to strengthen ties with the Habsburgs and the Holy Roman Empire. On the eastern borders, he used diplomacy to handle threats from the Crimean Tatars and Moscow. Economically, the demand for raw materials and goods stimulated massive trade. This growth encouraged the development of mining and crafts throughout the country. Casimir was even honored with the English Order of the Garter, the highest English chivalric honor.

By the time of his death in 1492, the Jagiellonian influence was vast.

He was succeeded by his son, John I Albert, as King of Poland. His brother, Alexander Jagiellon, became the Grand Duke of Lithuania. Casimir's ability to maintain the balance between two realms shaped the future of Eastern Europe. His reign transformed the political and economic landscape of the region. He left behind a legacy of centralized power and expanded territorial control.
