Carole Lombard was a prominent American actress of the Classic Hollywood era. She was highly regarded for her energetic and off-beat performances in screwball comedies. These films were characterized by fast-paced dialogue and witty humor. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her 23rd on its list of the greatest female stars of Classic Hollywood Cinema.

Her ability to master comedic timing made her a true icon of American cinema.

Lombard's career began with a surprising connection to athletics. Born Jane Alice Peters in 1908, she was a talented athlete in school. While playing baseball at age 12, she caught the attention of director Allan Dwan. He saw her playing and recruited her for a role in the melodrama A Perfect Crime.

This early experience led her to sign a contract with Fox Film Corporation at age 16. During this period, she mostly performed small bit parts in low-budget Westerns and adventure films.

Her professional path faced a major obstacle in September 1927. During a car accident, a shattered windshield left a scar on her face. The glass cut from her nose across her cheek to her eye.

Lombard underwent reconstructive surgery to address the injury. She eventually learned to hide the mark using makeup and careful studio lighting. This period became a turning point as she began working with Mack Sennett. She appeared in 18 short films for Sennett, which provided essential training for her future comedy work.

By 1930, Lombard had transitioned into feature films and signed with Paramount Pictures.

Paramount began casting her as a leading lady in various roles. Her contract at Paramount saw her salary grow from $350 per week to $3,500 per week by 1936. She found her specific niche in the screwball comedy genre. A major milestone was her role in the pioneering film Twentieth Century in 1934. This success led to a series of notable comedic performances throughout the 1930s.

Lombard's personal life often intersected with her professional fame. In 1931, she married actor William Powell. Although they divorced amicably after 26 months, they remained friends.

She later married the famous actor Clark Gable. The two became a massive media sensation, often referred to as a "supercouple." Her talent was recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences when she received a nomination for Best Actress for her role in My Man Godfrey.

Toward the end of the 1930s, Lombard attempted to transition into more serious dramatic roles. She hoped to win an Academy Award through these performances. However, these efforts were not as successful as her comedic work. She eventually returned to the genre that defined her career. Her final film role was in the 1942 film To Be or Not to Be.
