Carnosauria is a group of extinct carnivorous theropod dinosaurs. These meat-eating reptiles lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. In modern science, the definition of Carnosauria can change depending on the study. Some researchers define the group as a clade that includes both Allosauroidea and Megalosauroidea. These groups are part of the larger Tetanurae clade. However, other scientists argue that Allosauroidea and Megalosauroidea are not actually related.

To understand how these animals functioned, we must look at their unique anatomy. Carnosaurs possessed several distinctive physical traits. They had large eye sockets and long, narrow skulls. Their hands typically featured three fingers, with the second and third digits being nearly equal in length. A key measurement in their legs is that the femur, or thigh bone, is longer than the tibia, or shin bone. They also had a triangular-shaped pubic boot on their pelvis.

Their skulls were specifically designed for hunting. Many allosauroids had skulls that were two and a half to three times longer than they were tall. These narrow skulls worked with serrated teeth to slice flesh from prey. The teeth were flat, with the flat sides facing the sides of the skull. The edges of the teeth were lined with small, saw-like structures called denticles. The volume of the braincase, or cranial vault, varied between species. For example, Sinraptor had a volume of 95 milliliters, while Giganotosaurus reached 250 milliliters.

Movement and balance were also vital for these large predators. Carnosaurs maintained a specific center of mass as they moved. This center was located between 37% and 58% of the femoral length in front of the hip. Their pelvis was structured to reduce physical stress regardless of how large the animal grew. The angle of the femur helped reduce bending and torsion stress. Additionally, they possessed a caudofemoralis longus muscle. This muscle allowed them to flex their tails.

The history of studying Carnosauria shows how scientific ideas evolve. In the past, the name was used as a "dumping ground" for almost any large theropod. Even non-dinosaurs, like the rauisuchian Teratosaurus, were once included. During the 1980s and 1990s, new analyses changed this. Scientists realized most large theropods shared very few real characteristics. Many animals were reclassified. For instance, tyrannosaurids were moved to Coelurosauria because they are more closely related to birds.

We can even learn about the skin of these animals from fossils. Skin impressions from Allosaurus show small scales on the torso and mandible. These scales measured only 1 to 3 millimeters. Some impressions from the neck show broad scutate scales. The dinosaur Concavenator also provides clues about integument. It had rectangular scutate scales on its tail and scales on the tops of its feet. Some scientists even debated if knobs on its ulna were quill knobs for feathers, though others suggest they are ligament traces.

Size and scale varied greatly among the members of this group. The largest carnosaurs could reach lengths of up to 10 meters. In the Cretaceous period, some carnosaurs grew to sizes similar to the largest tyrannosaurids. We can see how their bodies were proportioned through fossil remains. The distance from the tail to the hip was between 54% and 62% of their total length. The distance from the head to the hip was between 38% and 46%.

Today, the classification of these dinosaurs remains a subject of intense debate. The relationship of groups like Megaraptora is still being studied. Some researchers place them within the Neovenatoridae family. Others believe they are coelurosaurs unrelated to carnosaurs. This uncertainty exists because different studies produce different results. As new fossils are analyzed, our understanding of the evolutionary tree continues to shift.
