Many people recognize its most famous musical pieces. These include the "Habanera" and "Seguidilla" from act 1. The "Toreador Song" from act 2 is also widely known.

The story is set in southern Spain around the year 1820.

It follows the downfall of a soldier named Don José. He is a naïve man who is seduced by Carmen. Carmen is a fiery gypsy with a strong personality. José abandons his military duties and his childhood sweetheart to follow her. Eventually, Carmen falls in love with the glamorous torero, Escamillo. This leads to a jealous rage in José, and he kills her. The plot explores themes of passion, lawlessness, and tragedy.

Creating the opera involved several talented artists.

Georges Bizet composed the music. Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy wrote the libretto, which is the text for the singers. They based their story on a novella by Prosper Mérimée.

This book was published in 1845 in the journal Revue des deux Mondes. Bizet was very excited about this specific commission. He told a friend that he felt he had finally found his path. The creators had to decide how to adapt the book for the stage. Bizet himself suggested using Mérimée's story.

The premiere of Carmen was a shocking event.

It first took place at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875. The first audiences were scandalized by the performance. The opera broke many conventions of the time. It depicted proletarian life, which refers to the lives of working people. It also showed immorality and lawlessness on stage. Most reviews were critical, and the French public felt indifferent. This was a very different reaction than the global acclaim it later received.

Bizet did not live to see the massive success of his work. He died suddenly after only 33 performances. He was actually in the middle of revising his musical score. Because of this, there is no single definitive edition of the opera. Later, Ernest Guiraud added recitatives to replace some of the original dialogue. This changed how the opera sounds in different versions. After the premiere, the opera gained its reputation through productions outside of France. It was not revived in Paris until 1883. After that, it became popular both at home and abroad.

The music of Carmen uses a large and diverse orchestra.

The instrumentation includes two flutes, two oboes, and two clarinets. It also uses two bassoons and four horns. The brass section features two trumpets and three trombones. A harp and a string section add to the sound. The percussion section is quite large. It includes timpani, side drum, triangle, tambourine, cymbals, castanets, and a bass drum. This variety of instruments helps create the atmospheric music that defines the show.

Carmen is seen as a bridge between two musical eras. It connects the tradition of opéra comique to a new style. This newer style is called verismo, which is a form of realism in Italian opera. This realism focuses on the true lives of ordinary people. Since the first acoustical recording in 1908, the opera has been recorded many times.
