La bohème

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

La bohème is a celebrated opera in four parts. Giacomo Puccini composed this work between 1893 and 1895. Instead of calling the divisions acts, Puccini used the terms quadri or tableaux. These words mean "images." This choice suggests the opera is a series of vivid scenes. The story is set in Paris around the year 1830. It explores the "bohemian" lifestyle, or bohème. This term describes a group of young people living with little money but much passion for art and freedom.

The plot follows a seamstress named Mimì and her artist friends. The characters are defined by their specific crafts and voices. Rodolfo is a poet who sings as a tenor. Marcello is a painter who sings as a baritone. Schaunard is a musician, and Colline is a philosopher who sings as a bass. Mimì is a seamstress who sings as a soprano. Their friend Musetta is a singer, also a soprano. Together, they navigate the joys and hardships of life in a small garret.

To create the opera, Puccini worked with librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. They wrote the libretto, which is the text used in an opera. The libretto is based on a book by Henri Murger titled Scènes de la vie de bohème. This 1851 book was a collection of vignettes about Parisian life. The opera's writers changed the book to make a stronger story. For instance, they merged two characters, Mimì and Francine, into one single Mimì. They also invented large sections of acts two and three to expand the drama.

The world premiere took place on February 1, 1896. It was held at the Teatro Regio in Turin, Italy. A 28-year-old conductor named Arturo Toscanini led the orchestra. The original cast included Evan Gorga as Rodolfo and Cesira Ferrani as Mimì. During this first performance, the music for Rodolfo had to be transposed lower. This was because the singer could not reach the high tessitura, which refers to the specific range of notes a voice is meant to sing.

History shows how deeply Puccini's music moved people. When Puccini died in Brussels in 1924, news reached Rome during a performance of La bohème. The production was stopped immediately. The orchestra played Chopin's Funeral March for the audience. In 1946, Toscanini led a commemorative radio performance. He conducted the NBC Symphony Orchestra to celebrate 50 years of the opera. This was the only recording ever made by the opera's original conductor.

While audiences love the opera, some critics have disagreed. The composer Benjamin Britten expressed a strong dislike for it in 1951. He felt the music was "cheap" and "empty" despite its neatness. However, the opera remains a cornerstone of the Italian repertory. It connects the personal struggles of individuals to the broader history of art and poverty. It continues to be a vital part of the musical world today.
