Fiorina spent many years working in the technology industry. She started her career as a trainee at AT&T. In 1990, she became the first female officer at that company. Later, she worked for Lucent Technologies. She helped lead a very successful project with a company called Philips. In 1998, Fortune magazine named her the most powerful woman in American business. She worked hard to help her companies grow and make more money. This success helped her move into even bigger leadership roles.

In 1999, Fiorina became the CEO of Hewlett-Packard, also known as HP.

This was a huge moment in business history. She was the first woman to lead a Fortune Top-20 company. During her time there, she oversaw a massive merger. HP bought a rival company called Compaq in 2001. This deal was worth 25 billion dollars in stock. Because of this merger, HP became the world's largest seller of personal computers.

Leading such a big company brought many difficult choices. The merger with Compaq caused some big changes for workers. HP had to let 30,000 employees in the U.S. go. However, Fiorina also hired many more people during her time as leader. The total number of employees grew to 150,000 by 2005. She faced disagreements with the HP board of directors. These disagreements led to her leaving the company in February 2005.
