He served as the president for ten years from 1989 to 1999. Menem was born in 1930 in a small town called Anillaco. His parents moved to Argentina from Syria. He grew up in a Muslim family. Later, he changed his religion to Roman Catholicism to help his career. He became a member of the Peronist party after meeting Juan Perón in 1951.

Menem's path to the presidency had many ups and downs. He was first elected as the governor of La Rioja in 1973. However, a military coup happened in 1976. This event removed him from power and put him in prison. He spent time in different jails and even lived in a city called Tandil. He was finally released in 1978. After that, he returned to politics and was elected governor again in 1983. He eventually won the presidential election in 1989.

To fix the economy, Menem used the Convertibility plan in 1991. This plan tied the Argentine peso to the U.S. dollar. He also sold state companies like airlines to private groups. This was called privatization. At first, these changes helped the economy grow.

His time in power also included some very difficult and sad events. During his presidency, Argentina suffered two terrorist attacks. One happened at the Israeli embassy in 1992. The other was the AMIA bombing in 1994.

These events were very hard for the country. Menem also faced many legal problems later in life. He was investigated for things like illegal arms trafficking and corruption. Some of these cases led to prison sentences, though his role as a senator protected him from going to jail.

People remember Menem in many different ways today. Some people view him as a leader who tried to modernize the country. Others criticize him for how he managed the economy. He was also known for his love of sports. He was a big fan of the River Plate football club. He often spent time with famous athletes like Diego Maradona. Menem died in 2021 at the age of 90. He was the oldest former president in Argentina at that time.
