Maderno helped start the Baroque style. This style uses bold shapes and light. He designed the front of Santa Susanna. This work was very strong and new. Pope Paul V liked his skill. The Pope made him the chief architect for St. Peter's Basilica. Maderno changed the plans for this huge church. He added a long part to the building. He also made a grand front with a balcony. This balcony was for the Pope to give blessings. Maderno also worked on the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle. He made a very large dome there. He also designed many palaces and chapels. His work helped shape how later artists built things. Maderno died in Rome in 1629. He was buried in San Giovanni dei Fiorentini.
