Richelieu had two main goals for France. First, he wanted to make the king more powerful. He did this by limiting the power of nobles. He even ordered many castles to be torn down. Second, he wanted to stop the Habsburg family from being too strong. This family ruled in Spain and Austria.

He also dealt with religious fights in France. He led an army to the city of La Rochelle.

This helped him gain control. Richelieu loved the arts and the French language. He helped start a group to study the language. He also helped support New France. He died in 1642. A man named Cardinal Mazarin took his place.
