The Cape Fear River flows into the sea here. The river carries silt to the coast. This silt helps form the land.

Two arcs of low beach meet here. Moving water in the ocean helps shape them. This water also makes the Frying Pan Shoals. These shoals are part of the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Many plants grow in the sand. Sea oats grow on the dunes. Other grasses like saltmeadow cordgrass grow there too. These plants can live with salt.

The river area drains a large part of the state. Many people live near this water. Cape Fear is also a place for weather news. The National Hurricane Center uses it for storm warnings.

Sailors gave the place its name. In 1585, a ship got stuck behind the cape. The crew felt afraid they would wreck. This name is very old in the U.S. It is the fifth-oldest English name left.
