Cao Futian was a prominent Chinese nationalist and a key leader during the Boxer Rebellion. He played a significant role in organizing a large group of people known as the Boxers. This movement arose during a time of great change in late 19th-century China. Cao was known for his charisma and his skill in martial arts. He was a master of Kung Fu, which helped him gain respect among his followers. His leadership helped turn a group of ordinary people into a powerful militia.

Cao built his militia in the city of Tianjin. Most of his followers were people who lacked formal education. This group included unemployed youth and workers who had been laid off from the railways. It also included criminals and religious fanatics. Cao used his personal charm to unite these different people under one cause. He felt a strong need to protect Chinese culture from outside influences. He specifically opposed the foreign concessions established in China. He also wanted to stop the spread of Christianity by missionaries. He believed that Chinese Christians threatened the purity of their own culture.

His relationship with the Chinese government was complex and changed over time. In August 1899, Cao was actually hostile toward the Chinese Imperial Army. He fought against the government's own soldiers during this period. However, the Qing government was deeply divided on how to handle the Boxers. Some parts of the imperial court were against them. Other conservative elements within the court actually supported the movement. Prince Duan was a fervent supporter of the Boxer cause. He eventually arranged a meeting between Cao Futian and Empress Dowager Ci Xi. During this meeting, the crown prince even wore a Boxer uniform to show an alliance.

Many followers viewed Cao as more than just a military leader. They saw him as a spiritual leader with divine abilities. There were many rumors about his supernatural powers. Along with another Boxer leader named Zhang Decheng, people claimed Cao could make himself disappear. Some believed he possessed the power of bilocation. Bilocation is the idea that a person can be in two different places at the same time. These beliefs added a layer of spiritual intensity to his leadership. His followers felt that his powers helped protect them during the rebellion.

In 1900, Cao established his official headquarters in Tianjin. He chose a location at 18 Hejia Lane on Ruyyi'an Street. This headquarters was located in an old temple that honored Lü Dongbin. This site is historically significant today. It is now known as the Boxer Museum, or the Memorial Hall of the Boxer Uprising. This location served as a central hub for the movement's activities during the height of the conflict.

The situation for the Boxers changed drastically in July 1900. A group of foreign powers called the Eight-Nation Alliance arrived to intervene. They engaged in a fierce battle against the city of Tianjin. The fighting lasted for three days. On July 14, 1900, the Allied forces successfully captured Tianjin. Cao Futian was present during this battle, but he could not hold the city. He was forced to flee the area and hide in Jinghai. This marked a major turning point in the rebellion's control over the region.

The end of Cao's life came after a period of hiding. In May 1901, the government captured him in Jinghai. He had been accused of conspiring to stir up further conflict. Following his arrest, Cao Futian was executed in 1901. The method of his execution was beheading. His life and death remain a part of the history of the Qing dynasty and the Boxer Rebellion. His story shows the intense tensions between Chinese nationalism and foreign influence during that era.
