Some animals have parents from different species. These mixed animals are called hybrids. 



Hybrids are animals born from two different species. In the dog family, many animals are very close relatives. These wolf-like animals all share 78 chromosomes. Chromosomes are tiny structures inside cells that carry genetic information. Because they have the same number of chromosomes, they can often breed together. This creates a hybrid. 
One common hybrid is the wolfdog. This happens when a domestic dog and a gray wolf breed. 

Other hybrids happen in the wild between different animals. In North America, coyotes and wolves sometimes breed to make coywolves. 

In Australia, the dingo is a special kind of wild dog. 
History shows us that people have noticed these mixes for a long time. Charles Darwin once saw a hybrid of an English dog and a jackal. He noted that some of these hybrids could have babies of their own. Other researchers, like Robert Armitage Sterndale, studied jackal hybrids in India. They found that jackal traits could still show up after three generations of breeding. These animal mixes help us understand how living things change over time. They show us how closely related different members of the dog family truly are.
Canid hybrids are animals created when two different species from the Caninae subfamily interbreed. This process is a way to study how closely related different animals are within the dog family. Hybridization occurs when the genetic structures of two animals are similar enough to allow for reproduction. 
The ability to hybridize depends heavily on chromosomes. Chromosomes are the structures that carry genetic information. Wolf-like canids are genetically very close because they all possess 78 chromosomes. These are arranged in 39 pairs, making them karyologically indistinguishable from one another. This group includes the genera Canis, Cuon, Lupulella, and Lycaon. When chromosome numbers and arrangements differ too much, hybridization becomes unlikely. The red fox has 34 chromosomes, the raccoon dog has 42, and the fennec fox has 64. These differences prevent them from breeding with the wolf-like group.
One common type of hybrid is the wolfdog. This is a cross between a domestic dog and a gray wolf. Because the dingo is also a subspecies of the gray wolf, these crosses are considered biologically unremarkable. 

In the wild, hybridization creates different populations like coywolves. These are the offspring of gray wolves and coyotes. Researchers at Uppsala University studied Mexican wolves to understand these connections. They found coyote markers in the mitochondrial DNA of these wolves. This suggests female coyotes mated with male Mexican wolves. Similarly, scientists found male wolf DNA in coyotes from Texas. 

The dingo provides another example of complex breeding. The dingo is a subspecies of the wolf that lives in Australia. 
In Africa, hybridization also presents challenges for conservation. The Ethiopian wolf is a rare species that faces threats from dog hybridization. Hybrids often have shorter muzzles and different coat patterns than pure wolves. To protect the genetic integrity of the Ethiopian wolf, some hybrids are sterilized. The African gold wolf is also known to hybridize with domestic dogs, Ethiopian wolves, and golden jackals. This shows how different species in the same area can interact through breeding.
Jackals also participate in hybridization. Studies in Bulgaria found evidence of golden jackal and gray wolf hybridization through DNA analysis. In Russia, people bred jackals with Lapponian Herders to create Sulimov dogs.
