It is a satire. A satire is a story that uses humor to mock ideas. The story follows a young man named Candide. At first, he lives a very safe life. His teacher, Pangloss, tells him that all is for the best. This is called optimism.

However, Candide travels the world and sees many hard things. He sees the effects of war and big disasters. One major event was the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

This earthquake and a tsunami caused much ruin. These events made Voltaire doubt the idea of optimism. He thought the world could not be perfect if such things happened. The story moves very fast and is often funny. It mocks many things like governments and religion. By the end, Candide says we must "cultivate our garden." This means we should focus on useful work. Many people think this is Voltaire's best work. It is still taught in many schools today.
