She was born in Brooklyn, New York. She studied art, music, and dance. Later, she moved to California to act in plays.

In 1975, she began acting in adult films. She acted in about 25 movies. But she soon wanted to change how these films were made. She felt most films only focused on men. She wanted to show a female point of view.

In 1984, she started a company called Femme Productions. She worked with Lauren Neimi to run it. Her films were for women and for couples. They showed healthy and real ways to be close. Many doctors and therapists liked her work.

Royalle also wrote books and gave many talks. She spoke at big places like the Smithsonian Institution. She even wrote a book called How to Tell a Naked Man What to Do. She died in 2015 from ovarian cancer. Her life and her work are kept in a special library at Harvard. People still study her role in history today.
