Canaan Banana was a leader in Zimbabwe. He was born in 1936. He worked as a Methodist minister. He also worked in schools.

Banana helped his country become free. At that time, the land was called Rhodesia. He fought for a new type of rule. This rule gave more power to the local people. In 1980, he became the first president of Zimbabwe. This was a very big job. He was a ceremonial president. This means his role was mostly for show. In 1987, he stepped down. Robert Mugabe took his place.

Banana also worked to bring groups together. He helped two main political groups join as one. This helped the country stay peaceful.

Later, Banana faced hard times. He was accused of crimes. In 1998, a court found him guilty of many charges. He went to prison for six months. He died of cancer in 2003. Some people still remember his work for his country. Robert Mugabe called him a rare gift to the nation.
