In Argentina, there is a special place called Campo del Cielo. This name means "Field of Heaven" in English.

It is a large area near the provinces of Chaco and Santiago del Estero. This place contains at least 26 craters in the ground. The largest crater is 300 meters wide. These craters were made by rocks from space. Scientists think the impact happened 4,200 to 4,700 years ago. These space rocks are called meteorites.

The meteorites themselves are very old. They are about 4.5 billion years old.

How did these many pieces get there? A huge object likely entered the Earth's atmosphere. It broke into many pieces while it fell. These pieces then landed across a large area. This created a strewn field of smaller meteorites. The main body was likely larger than 10 meters wide. The fragments are mostly made of iron and nickel. They also contain small amounts of other things like cobalt and germanium.

The metal is very pure. This is why so many pieces were found.

People have known about these rocks for a long time. Aboriginal peoples knew about them long before others did. In 1576, a Spanish governor sent soldiers to find the metal. They heard native people used it for weapons. Later, in 1774, Don Bartolomé Francisco de Maguna found a mass. He called it "the Table of Iron." In 1783, Rubin de Celis led another expedition. He used explosives to clear the ground. He thought the metal came from a volcano. He sent samples to the Royal Society in London. Scientists there found the metal was actually from space.

Many huge pieces have been found over the years. In 1803, people found a mass called Otumpa. It weighed about 1 tonne. In 1969, a metal detector found El Chaco below the ground. It was taken out in 1980. It weighed 28.8 tonnes. In 2016, the largest piece was found. It is named Gancedo after a nearby town. Gancedo weighs 30.8 tonnes.

Altogether, people have found 100 tonnes of fragments. This is the most meteorite metal found in one spot on Earth.

These heavy rocks are very important to study. They help us learn about the Solar System. The metal pieces are part of how our world began. Some pieces are very small. They can weigh only a few milligrams. Other pieces are huge like the Gancedo meteorite. These large rocks are now protected by law. This helps keep them safe from people who might try to steal them. Finding them is like finding a piece of history from the sky.
