He was born in Guise, a place in northern France. As a young man, he went to a great school in Paris. He was a very smart student who loved reading old books. He studied law to start a career, but it was quite hard. He had a stammer that made speaking difficult for him. Because of this, he often lived with very little money. He eventually turned to writing to share his many ideas.

In July 1789, Camille's life changed very quickly. The King of France had dismissed a popular leader named Jacques Necker. This news made the people in Paris very upset. On July 12, Camille jumped onto a table to speak.

He told the crowd to pick up arms and wear green ribbons. These ribbons were called cockades to show they were patriots. His speech helped start the famous storming of the Bastille prison. This event made him a very famous person in France.

Camille used his writing to push for big changes. He wrote a pamphlet called "Free France" to share his thoughts. He believed France should be a republic instead of having a king. A republic is a government where the people have power. He also wrote a paper called "History of the Revolutions of France."

This paper was very popular with many readers. He used his words to attack old rules and unfair leaders. His writing was often very sharp and sometimes very angry.

As time went on, the Revolution became much more violent. This period was known as the Reign of Terror. Camille had close friends who were also leaders, like Georges Danton. However, he began to disagree with the new, harsh government. He started a new journal called "Le Vieux Cordelier." In this paper, he asked for more kindness and mercy. He did not want the government to be so extreme. This was a very brave and difficult choice to make.

His new ideas made the powerful leaders very angry. One leader, Maximilien Robespierre, was not happy with Camille's words. In April 1794, Camille was sent to a special court.
