This collection was started by Calouste Gulbenkian, a man who lived in Portugal. He had a motto that said "only the best." Because of this, the museum holds masterpieces from many different times and places.

Visitors can see art from Ancient Egypt all the way to the early 20th century. It is a place where people go to discover how humans have created beauty for thousands of years.

When you visit, you can choose between two different paths to see the art.

The first path focuses on the ancient world. You can see art from the Nile Valley and the ancient Near East. This includes pieces from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, and Armenia. The second path shows European art from the 11th century to the mid-20th century. This path includes beautiful books, sculptures, and paintings. You might even find a special room filled with sparkling jewels and glass by René Lalique.

Calouste Gulbenkian worked hard to build this amazing collection. He bought many famous works, including some from a sale of Hermitage paintings in the Soviet Union. The museum has about 6,000 items in its total collection. However, only around 1,000 of these are on permanent display for people to see.

The museum also has a Modern Art Centre called the CAM. This center was opened in 1983 and is the first museum of modern art in Portugal. Today, the CAM holds about 12,000 pieces of art.

The museum buildings were designed to work perfectly with the land around them.

A team of architects and landscapers worked together to create the site. They built the headquarters and a beautiful park for everyone to enjoy. The buildings have T-shaped wings and sit near water features and woods. In 1975, the property even won the Valmor Prize. The museum is currently closed for renovations and will reopen in July 2026.

Walking through the museum feels like traveling through time. You can see paintings by famous artists like Rembrandt, Monet, and Renoir.

You can also look at 18th-century French furniture and gold objects. The museum connects the ancient past to the modern world. It shows how art from China, Japan, and the Islamic world lives alongside European art. It is a place where the natural world and human creativity meet.
