People use them for simple sums or hard math. Long ago, people used bones or pebbles to count. In the 1600s, people made machines with moving parts.

Electronic calculators arrived in the early 1960s. Small ones for your pocket became common in the 1970s.

Most calculators have a keypad and a screen. You press buttons to enter numbers. This sends a signal to a tiny chip. This chip is called a microprocessor. It acts like a brain for the tool.

The chip follows steps to find an answer. It takes the numbers and the math command. Then, it sends the result to the display. Most screens use liquid-crystal displays, or LCDs. These screens use tiny parts to show digits.

Calculators need power to work. They can use batteries or solar cells. Solar cells use light from the sun to make power.

Some large models even plug into a wall. You can find calculators on phones and tablets too. They help us solve math problems very quickly.
