They like to stay in swamps, lakes, and rivers. Most caimans are active at night.

There are six different kinds of caiman. The black caiman is the biggest. It lives near the Amazon basin.

This large caiman can grow over 15 feet long. The smallest is the Cuvier's dwarf caiman. It only grows to about 5 feet.

Caimans look a lot like alligators. But they have some differences. They have longer and sharper teeth. Their skin is also stiffer. This is because of tiny bony parts in their scales.

Caimans are predators. They mostly eat fish. They also hunt birds, bugs, and small mammals.

They have very few enemies in the wild. Jaguars and anacondas sometimes hunt them.

Female caimans build large nests. They lay between 10 and 50 eggs. The eggs hatch in about six weeks. Mothers take their babies to shallow water. The young learn to swim and hunt there.
