Cahokia was part of the Mississippian culture. This group lived across much of the United States. Around the year 1050, the city grew very fast. This was called a "Big Bang." Many people moved there from far away. Some came from the Great Lakes. Others came from the Gulf Coast.

People built many large mounds out of dirt. They used woven baskets to carry the earth. They worked on these mounds for many years.

The city had large, flat areas for ceremonies. These were called plazas.

At its peak, the city was very big. It had between 15,000 and 20,000 people. Some experts think even more lived there. They grew crops like maize, which is corn. They also traded items like copper and shark teeth. By the year 1400, the city was empty. Today, it is a special park for everyone to visit.
