Recent biological discoveries have revealed surprising behaviors in certain species. For example, the species Siphonops annulatus exhibits a form of lactation. Mothers provide their hatchlings with a nutrient-rich, white, viscous liquid through a maternal vent. This substance is high in fats and carbohydrates and is produced by specialized glands in the oviduct. Researchers observed that hatchlings even make high-pitched clicking sounds to request this food. This behavior is a rare example of milk-like provisioning in non-mammalian animals.
Caecilians are distributed across several tropical regions of the world. They are found in parts of South and Central America, Africa, and southern Asia. In South America, they can even be found as far south as Buenos Aires. In Africa, their range extends from Guinea-Bissau to southern Malawi. While most are land-dwellers, some families like Typhlonectidae are actually aquatic. These aquatic species often have a fleshy fin along their rear bodies to help them swim.
