The name "Cabinda" has a specific origin. Historian Joaquim Martins suggests it comes from two words. The first part comes from "Mafuca." This was a title for a high-ranking trade official in local kingdoms. The second part comes from "Binda," the name of a specific official. Binda was responsible for trade between native kingdoms and the Portuguese. In the 19th century, the city had other names. It was called Porto Rico, Vila Amélia, and Palmar. Another name, Chioua, comes from a legend. It refers to a mermaid said to live in the area.
