Later, from 1840 to 1852, workers built huge granite-brick locks. These were the Śluza Prądy and Osowa Góra locks. By 1858, about 4,000 boats used the canal every year. After 1885, steam ships also began to use the path.

Today, the canal is a special part of history. It is listed on the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship Heritage List. This happened on 30 November 2005. You can see old parts of the canal in a natural park. The canal helps us understand how people moved goods long ago. It shows how humans can connect different rivers to travel. It achieves this connection through the Brda and Noteć rivers. Specifically, the Noteć flows into the Warta river, which eventually reaches the Oder. Because it links these major basins, the canal is a key component of the Vistula-Oder Waterway. This larger waterway is 294.3 km long and forms part of the international Waterway E70. This international route connects the Atlantic Ocean and Antwerp in Belgium to the Baltic Sea and Klaipėda in Lithuania.

To allow boats to travel through changing elevations, the canal utilizes a system of locks. A lock is a chamber that manages the level difference between different sections of water. The Bydgoszcz Canal uses six locks to regulate these height changes. The route begins in downtown Bydgoszcz and flows through the western part of the city. It then crosses the Bydgoszcz district for 7 km before reaching Nakło nad Notecią. Beyond that point, the waterway continues through the Noteć and Warta rivers. The canal follows a path through an ancient valley about 2 km wide. This valley is surrounded by steep edges. To the north, the Krajeńskie Lake District banks rise 25 to 40 m high. To the south, the upper slopes of the Toruń basin are 10 to 15 m high.

Historically, the idea of linking these rivers dates back many centuries. Archaeological evidence suggests navigation between the Brda and Noteć rivers happened in the distant past. An anchor was found in 1827 on what is now Grunwaldzka Street. In 1840, remains of a ship and a docking installation were found near Łochowo. Discussions to link the rivers occurred in the 16th century during Polish-Brandenburg talks. King Władysław IV Vasa renewed these discussions in the 1630s. In the 1750s, canal projects were popular across Europe. In Poland, Prince Michał Kazimierz Ogiński supported the Oginski Canal. However, political turmoil and the First Partition of Poland delayed many local projects.

The Prussian project was eventually realized after the First Partition of Poland. During this time, the lands of the Vistula, Brda, and Noteć rivers fell under Prussian control. King Frederick II of Prussia took a specific interest in the project. Several key figures worked on the plan, including politician Franz von Brenkenhoff and engineer Hermann Jawein. Jawein identified the potential of the local hydrographic system. He suggested that draining the Bydgoszcz canal valley could provide meadow resources. In February 1772, this idea was presented to the king. The design relied on draining and re-routing an ancient urstromtal, which is a glacial valley.

Construction began in the spring of 1773 using a massive workforce. Approximately 8,000 workers arrived from Mecklenburg, Thuringia, Saxony, Dessau, and Czechia. The work was incredibly difficult and dangerous. Sadly, 2,000 workers died from fever and dysentery. The remaining workers were ordered to settle in three colonies at Osowa Góra. The canal officially opened on 14 June 1774, though work continued until 1775. Initially, the canal featured 10 wooden locks. Nine of these were in Bydgoszcz, and one was in Nakło nad Notecią. To ensure enough water, engineers built the Górnonotecki Canal. This channel brought water from the Noteć river to the canal near Łochowo.

Maintenance and modernization became necessary as the canal aged. Between 1795 and 1801, inspector Ernst Conrad Peterson rebuilt nine locks and three weirs. He used brick material for the first time, replacing the previously used sandstone. These rebuilt locks all shared the same dimensions. Peterson also planted trees on the banks, creating what is now the Old Bydgoszcz canal natural park.

Later, from 1840 to 1852, workers constructed two massive granite-brick locks. These were the Śluza Prądy and the Osowa Góra lock. They were much larger than previous locks, measuring 10 by 12 m. By 1858, shipping traffic had grown to 4,000 boats annually. After 1885, the arrival of steam ships further increased the canal's importance. By that time, approximately 500,000 tons of cargo were transported each year.

Today, the Bydgoszcz Canal is recognized for its historical and cultural value. It was listed on the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship Heritage List on 30 November 2005. The canal remains a vital part of the regional landscape and the international waterway network. Many large harbors and berths serve the route, including those in Bydgoszcz, Nakło nad Notecią, Ujście, and Czarnków. The canal connects various economic hubs and remains a testament to 18th-century engineering.
