There are many ways to group these schools. One way is to look at their culture. Some follow a model from Europe, while others follow a US model. You can also look at their reach. Some schools are global, but others are local or regional. Money is another way to group them. Some schools get money from the state, and others use tuition or gifts. Finally, schools can focus on teaching or on doing research. This helps people understand how different schools work.

A business school is a higher education institution dedicated to management and business administration. These schools prepare students for careers in leadership and organizational operations. Most business schools exist as departments within larger universities. However, some are privately owned and have no university affiliation. In France, many schools operate as public-private partnerships. These are known as École consulaire or EESC. They are often financed by public Chambers of Commerce. These elite schools belong to the Conférence des Grandes Écoles.

Researchers use different ways to classify these institutions. Andreas Kaplan identified four main categories for business schools. The first is culture, which compares the European model to the US model. The second is the compass, which measures if a school is global or local. The third is capital, which looks at whether funding is public or private. Finally, the content category distinguishes schools that focus on teaching from those focused on research. This helps people understand the different goals of each institution.

The history of business education began in eighteenth-century Europe. In 1759, a school in Lisbon was founded to teach accounting. It served as a model for government-sponsored schools across Europe until it closed in 1844. The oldest existing business school is the ESCP Business School in Paris. It was established in 1819 and functioned as a family firm for several decades.

As the nineteenth century ended, business schools spread rapidly. The Wharton School in Philadelphia became the first US business school in 1881. In 1898, the Haas School of Business became the first public business school in the United States. The same year, the University of St. Gallen became Switzerland's first business university. The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College followed in 1900. It was the first graduate business school in the US. It awarded a Master of Science in Commercial Sciences. This degree was a predecessor to the modern MBA.

The Master of Business Administration, or MBA, is a very important degree. Harvard Business School was the first to offer it in 1908. Since then, MBA programs have appeared all over the world. The first MBA outside the US was in Canada in 1948. The first MBA in Africa launched in 1949 at the University of Pretoria. In 1955, the University of Karachi launched the first MBA in Asia.

In 1957, INSEAD in France pioneered the one-year MBA format. This helped change how business degrees are structured globally.

Students in these schools earn many different types of degrees. In the United States, students might earn an Associate, Bachelor, or Master degree. Common Master's degrees include the MBA or a Master of Science in Management. Some students even pursue a Doctor of Business Administration. In Europe, degrees follow the Bologna Process. This system uses ECTS credits to help students move between countries. A typical bachelor's degree requires 180 to 240 credits. A master's degree usually requires 90 to 120 credits.

A unique way students learn is through the case study method. A case study is a historical description of a real business situation. These stories cover a company's products, markets, and financial structure. They can be as short as two pages or as long as 30 pages. Students use these cases to practice making strategic decisions. One method involves answering specific questions about the case. Another is problem-solving analysis, which was started by Harvard Business School. This method helps students develop intuition for complex situations through hundreds of analyses.
