In 1961, a group called the Freedom Riders traveled on buses. They wanted to show that segregation was wrong. When they reached Birmingham, they were met by angry mobs. Connor did not send the police to help them. The riders were attacked.

In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led protests in Birmingham. He wanted stores and jobs to be open to everyone. Connor used fire hoses and police dogs against the protesters. Many protesters were children. People saw this on TV. This made the world very sad. These events helped lead to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This new law helped make things fairer in America.
