Many people know this dinosaur from movies and books. It is often seen as the classic long-necked dinosaur. Scientists group it in a family called Diplodocidae. This group of dinosaurs had long tails and shorter necks. They lived in the Morrison Formation in Utah and Wyoming.

This dinosaur had a very specific way of moving and eating. It was a quadruped, which means it walked on four legs.

However, a major 2015 study by Emmanuel Tschopp and his team proved it was a distinct genus. This discovery helped clarify the complex family tree of these long-necked creatures.

Within this family, Brontosaurus belongs to the subfamily Apatosaurinae. This subfamily includes only Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus. These two relatives are distinguished by their firm builds and thick necks. Diplodocids first evolved during the Middle Jurassic. They reached their peak diversity during the Late Jurassic before going extinct in the Early Cretaceous. This specific group of dinosaurs played a major role in the ecosystems of their time.

This was a fierce fossil-collecting rivalry between paleontologists Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope. In 1879, Marsh described the first species, Brontosaurus excelsus. He based this on a partial skeleton found at Como Bluff, Wyoming, by William Harlow Reed. Because of the rivalry, Marsh often rushed his scientific publications. This led to many different names being assigned to similar fossils. Later, in 1902, B. parvus was named. In 1994, a third species, B. yahnahpin, was identified.

Because no clear Brontosaurus skull was available, they used bones from Camarasaurus instead. This resulted in an inaccurate reconstruction. For decades, many museum mounts featured these incorrect, thick skulls. It was not until later research that scientists realized these animals actually had more slender, Diplodocus-like skulls. This shows how new fossils can correct old mistakes.

Brontosaurus lived in a very crowded and diverse environment. The Morrison Formation was a hotspot for many different types of dinosaurs.

Brontosaurus coexisted with other sauropods like Diplodocus, Barosaurus, and Brachiosaurus. It shared the landscape with herbivores such as Stegosaurus and Dryosaurus.
