It sits at the confluence where the Svitava and Svratka rivers meet. The city is home to about 403,000 inhabitants. This makes it the second-largest city in the Czech Republic. The wider Brno metropolitan area is even larger, with roughly 730,000 people.

As a central hub, it serves as the political and cultural heart of its region.

Today, Brno is a vital center for the Czech judiciary. Many important legal institutions are located here. These include the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court. The Supreme Administrative Court and the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office also operate in the city. Other state authorities, such as the Ombudsman, are based here.

The city is also a massive center for higher education. It hosts 10 different universities and 29 individual faculties. The student population is quite large, with over 65,000 people studying there. Additionally, more than 60 secondary schools serve the city's youth.

The city's direct ancestor was a fortified settlement called Staré Zámky. This site was part of the Great Moravian Empire. It served as a strategic hub connecting the empire to local ironworks. A massive fire destroyed much of the hillfort around the 9th or 10th century.

During the Middle Ages, Brno became a key seat of power. In the 11th century, it was one of three major Moravian centers. In 1243, King Wenceslaus I granted it a royal city charter.

This charter arrived alongside new German settlers and migrants. In the 17th century, the city's role changed during the Thirty Years' War. Because the city of Olomouc was targeted by Swedish armies, political power moved to Brno.

Brno successfully defended itself against a Swedish siege in 1645. After the war, it became the sole capital of the Margraviate of Moravia.

Industrialization brought big changes to the city in the 18th and 19th centuries. A textile industry boom earned Brno the nickname "Moravian Manchester."

While this brought wealth, it also caused difficult living conditions. Many factory workers faced long shifts and poor housing. The city also saw significant military history. In 1805, the Battle of Austerlitz was fought nearby.

Napoleon Bonaparte even stayed in the city for several weeks during that time.

Brno has also been a place of great scientific and technical discovery. In the 1850s, Gregor Mendel studied pea plants at St. Thomas's Abbey.
