Scientists use a special shape to study waves.

Brillouin zone

This shape is called a Brillouin zone. It was named after Léon Brillouin. He was a physicist from France.

In science, we look at how waves move through patterns. These patterns can be very big or very small. The Brillouin zone is a part of a special space. We call this reciprocal space. It is a way to map out how waves behave.

The first Brillouin zone is the most important part. It is a single cell in this space. This cell is the set of points closest to the center. You can reach these points without crossing a Bragg plane. A Bragg plane is a boundary in this space.

One zone can tell us almost everything. If we know how waves act in one zone, we know more. We do not need to look at other zones. This is because extra zones do not give new information.

There are also other zones. These are called second or third zones. They sit further away from the center. They have the same size as the first zone.
