Brigid is a name from old Ireland. The name means "the high one."

Many people believe she was a goddess. In old stories, she was a daughter of the Dagda. She was a member of a group called the Tuatha Dé Danann.

Some thinkers say she was a triple deity. This means she had three parts. One book says she had two sisters. One sister helped with healing. The other sister helped with smithing. The first Brigid was a goddess for poets. She also helped with protection and animals.

Many people also know Saint Brigid. Some say the saint and the goddess are linked. The saint shares many traits with the goddess. She is a patron for healers and blacksmiths. She is also linked to the start of spring.

People celebrate her on February 1. This day was once a festival called Imbolc.

In the past, nuns kept a fire burning for her. This fire stayed lit at a place called Kildare. Today, her name is still used in many ways. A spot on the planet Venus is named after the goddess.
