Brendan Eich is a prominent American computer programmer and technology executive. He is a central figure in the history of the modern internet. Eich is most famous for creating JavaScript, a programming language used worldwide. He also helped found the Mozilla project and the Mozilla Corporation. His work has shaped how people interact with websites every day. Through his various roles, he has influenced both software development and digital privacy.

Eich's most significant technical achievement began at Netscape Communications Corporation in April 1995. He originally intended to implement a language called Scheme within the web browser. However, his managers requested that the new language's syntax resemble Java. To meet these requirements, Eich combined several different programming concepts. He utilized the functionality of Scheme and the object-orientation of Self. He then applied the syntax of Java to create a unique tool. He completed this first version in only ten days to meet a release schedule.

The language underwent several name changes during its early development. It was first called Mocha. In September 1995, the name was changed to LiveScript. Finally, in December 1995, Netscape and Sun Microsystems announced the name JavaScript. Alongside the language, Eich designed the SpiderMonkey engine. This engine is the specific implementation that executes JavaScript within the Navigator browser. The engine was originally written in the C language. It was later updated to comply with the ECMA-262 standard.

Eich has been a key leader in the open-source software movement. In early 1998, he co-founded the Mozilla project with Jamie Zawinski and others. This project aimed to manage open-source contributions to Netscape's source code. Eich served as the project's chief architect. When AOL purchased Netscape in 1999, the project continued to evolve. After AOL closed the Netscape browser unit in July 2003, Eich helped create the Mozilla Foundation. In 2005, he became the chief technical officer of the Mozilla Corporation.

In March 2014, the Mozilla Corporation appointed Eich as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This appointment led to significant public controversy. The criticism centered on Eich's past political donations regarding same-sex marriage. Specifically, he donated $1,000 to California Proposition 8 in 2008. He also gave $2,100 to supporter Tom McClintock between 2008 and 2010. These donations caused widespread disagreement among the public and within the tech community. Some board members left the company in response to the decision.

The backlash against Eich's appointment was intense and organized. An online campaign emerged, and the dating site OkCupid displayed messages suggesting users switch browsers. CREDO Mobile collected over 50,000 signatures demanding his resignation. Eich expressed sorrow for the pain caused by the situation. He pledged to work with LGBT communities and allies. However, after only 11 days as CEO, Eich resigned on April 3, 2014. He stated in a blog post that he could not be an effective leader under those circumstances.

Following his time at Mozilla, Eich moved into the field of digital privacy. He became the co-founder and CEO of Brave Software. This company focuses on a web browser platform that blocks advertisements and trackers. In January 2016, the company released developer versions of the Brave browser, which is based on Chromium. Eich also helped co-create the Basic Attention Token (BAT). BAT is a cryptocurrency designed specifically for use within the Brave browser.

The development of BAT represented a major financial milestone. The cryptocurrency launched its Initial Coin Offering (ICO) on May 31, 2017. This launch raised $35 million from investors. Brave Software also received $2.5 million in early funding from various angel investors. These investors included the Founders Fund, Foundation Capital, and Digital Currency Group. Eich's career demonstrates the deep connections between software engineering, corporate leadership, and social influence in the digital age.
