According to the American Marketing Association, a brand can be a name, a term, a design, or a symbol. It is more than just a visual mark; it represents a strategic personality. This personality includes the values and promises that a consumer perceives and buys into. In modern business, branding helps create and store brand equity. Brand equity is the measurable total worth of a brand. This worth is validated by how effective the brand's various components are in the marketplace.

To build a brand, managers use a specific toolbox of marketing and communication techniques. One key part is brand identity, which is the core image of the company. Another part is brand personality, which gives the company human-like traits. Product design also plays a major role in how a brand is recognized. Companies use brand communication, such as logos and trademarks, to reach people.

They also focus on brand awareness, which is how much people know about them. Finally, they aim for brand loyalty, where customers repeatedly choose them over others. These tools work together to create a lasting impression in the minds of customers.

Branding has evolved through many distinct stages of human history. It began as a literal act of marking. The word "brand" comes from the Old Norse word "brandr," meaning "to burn."

In ancient Egypt, around 2,700 BCE, people used hot branding irons on livestock. This allowed owners to identify their cattle and deter theft. As societies grew, branding moved from animals to objects. In Mesopotamia, producers used stone or clay seals to label goods.

These seals often featured images that gave the product a unique personality.

In the Mediterranean, ancient Greeks and Romans developed sophisticated ways to signal quality. By the 6th century BCE, pottery marking was common in Greece. Some vases even included inscriptions like "Sophilos painted me" to identify the artist.

These labels provided details about the place of origin, the destination, and the type of product. This helped consumers understand the quality of the goods they were purchasing.

Other regions developed their own unique branding traditions. In India, maker's marks have been found dating back to 1,300 BCE. One of the oldest generic brands is a herbal paste called chyawanprash, used since the Vedic period. In China, during the Song dynasty (960–1127 CE), branding was highly developed. A famous example is Jinan Liu's Fine Needle Shop, which used a "White Rabbit" trademark.

This symbol represented good luck and helped women, the primary buyers, find the shop easily.

In the modern era, the scale of branding has become massive. Companies use brand valuation, a management technique, to assign a specific monetary value to their brands. This is important because brand owners manage their brands to create value for shareholders. In the 21st century, branding is often the main way to differentiate products. Many products are very similar, so the brand is what makes one stand out.

Today, branding extends far beyond physical goods like oil, wine, or cosmetics. It now includes services such as legal, financial, and medical help. Even political parties and the stage names of famous people function as brands. It is a system that connects products to human identity. By using these tools, companies aim to distinguish themselves from every competitor in the global market.
