In 2000, he earned his degree from the Actors Studio Drama School at The New School. During this time, he studied under the coach Elizabeth Kemp. She helped him learn how to relax during his performances. While studying, he also worked as a doorman at the Morgans Hotel. This period of training prepared him for the complex demands of professional acting.

His early career involved a mix of television roles and small film parts. He made his television debut in the series Sex and the City in 1999. From 2001 to 2006, he appeared in the television series Alias. In this show, he played Will Tippin, a local newspaper reporter. His first film role was in the comedy Wet Hot American Summer in 2001.

Although this film was not a big hit, it later gained a cult following. He also appeared in the comedy Wedding Crashers in 2005. In that film, he played an aggressive character named Sack Lodge. This role helped change how the public viewed his acting abilities.

Cooper experienced a massive career breakthrough with the comedy The Hangover in 2009.

He played Phil Wenneck, one of three friends in Las Vegas. The film was a major commercial success in the United States. This role helped establish him as a leading man in Hollywood. Following this success, he took on much more diverse roles. He acted in the psychological thriller Limitless and the drama The Place Beyond the Pines. He also voiced the character Rocket in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This voice work began with the film Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014.

Cooper often uses intense physical preparation for his various roles. For the film The A-Team, he underwent a grueling workout routine. He also changed his diet by abstaining from sugar, salt, and flour. This discipline helped him prepare for the character Templeton "Faceman" Peck. He has also moved into directing and producing films. For the musical romance A Star Is Born in 2018, he served as a producer, writer, and director.

This project was a massive success in both film and music. The soundtrack reached number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. The single "Shallow" also reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

His personal history and upbringing also influenced his path to acting. He was born on January 5, 1975, in Abington Township, Pennsylvania. His father, Charles Cooper, worked as a stockbroker. His mother, Gloria, worked at KYW-TV in Philadelphia. His parents initially preferred that he pursue a career in finance. However, they changed their minds after seeing him perform. He played Joseph Merrick in a production of the play The Elephant Man. This performance convinced them of his talent for the stage. He later reprised this role in a Broadway revival.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Cooper is involved in various social and professional circles. He has been named to the Times list of the 100 most influential people in the world. He has also appeared on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list three times. Outside of Hollywood, he supports several charities that fight cancer. His career connects the worlds of dramatic acting, musical composition, and film production. He continues to work on diverse projects, such as the biographical drama Maestro. His ability to move between these different fields shows his range as an artist.
