The movement was led by a group called the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists. In English, people called them the "Boxers." This was because many members practiced Chinese martial arts. They were angry about foreign influence in their country. They wanted to stop foreign powers from taking control of China.

Many things caused the people to feel angry. In the late 1800s, foreign nations were trying to take parts of China. This was sometimes called the "scramble for China."

Foreigners built railroads and telegraph lines. These projects sometimes destroyed important Chinese burial sites. Christian missionaries also caused tension in local villages. Some people felt missionaries ignored local customs. They even blamed Christian influence for natural disasters like droughts and floods.

The Boxers were often young, unemployed men from villages. They practiced martial arts and weapons training. They believed they had spiritual powers. The Boxers claimed they were invulnerable to bullets and cannons. They even used blank rounds in guns to show this to new members.

Their main goal was to "Support the Qing government and destroy the foreigners." They attacked foreign property and Chinese Christians. In June 1900, they moved toward the capital city of Beijing. They surrounded the Legation Quarter where diplomats and missionaries lived.

To stop the uprising, an Eight-Nation Alliance invaded China. This group included troops from eight different nations. These were the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Italy, and Austria-Hungary.

The Alliance forces fought to lift the siege in Beijing. They arrived in the capital on August 14, 1900. After the fighting, the Alliance took control of the city. The conflict led to a formal agreement called the Boxer Protocol.

The results of the rebellion changed China forever. The Boxer Protocol required China to pay a huge amount of money. This was 450 million taels of silver. This was more than the government's yearly tax money. The payment was spread over 39 years.

The rebellion also made the Qing dynasty much weaker. It lost control and credibility over the people. This weakness eventually led to the Xinhai Revolution. The events of the rebellion helped shape the modern history of China.
