Bouaké

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Bouaké is a large and busy city in the middle of Ivory Coast. It is the second-largest city in the whole country. You can find it sitting northeast of Lake Kossou, which is the biggest lake in Ivory Coast. The city is also north of the capital, Yamoussoukro, and north of the city of Abidjan. It serves as a main center for the Gbêkê Region and the Vallée du Bandama District. Many people live here, with about 740,000 residents recorded in 2021.

The weather in Bouaké follows a tropical wet and dry pattern. This means the city has two very different seasons. There is a long wet season that lasts from March through October. After the rains, a shorter dry season begins for the next four months. This dry time is influenced by the harmattan wind. Even though the wet season is long, the city does not get as much rain as Abidjan.

People have lived in this area for a long time. In the 1800s, groups called the Assabou and Baoulé settled nearby. They first called the village Gbèkèkro. This name came from a leader named Gossan Kwa Gbeke. The name Bouaké might also come from Baoulé words. One word, "Boua," means sheep. The other word, "Ké," means dry. This could mean the place is where sheep are dried.

Work and trade are very important in Bouaké. The city processes things like cotton, rice, and sisal. People also make textiles and tobacco products there. Nearby, workers find valuable things like gold, mercury, and manganese. In 2012, a large cashew processing plant opened in the city. This plant alone provides nearly 2,400 jobs for local people. The city is also working hard to rebuild its economy after difficult times in the past.

It is easy to travel to and from Bouaké. There is an airport located to the northwest of the city. A railway also runs through the city to connect Abidjan to Burkina Faso. For sports fans, there is a huge stadium called Stade de la Paix. It was built in 1984 for a big football tournament. The stadium can hold 40,000 people. A local football team called Bouaké FC plays matches there.
