In the 1990s, Boris Nemtsov became a very important part of the Russian government. He first served as the governor of Nizhny Novgorod from 1991 to 1997. During this time, he worked hard to change the local economy. He even issued his own special money called "Nemtsovki" to help the region. Later, he moved to the national government in Moscow. He served as the Minister of Fuel and Energy in 1997. He also held the role of Vice Premier of Russia. He worked to make oil sales more honest and clear.

As the years went on, Boris Nemtsov became a leader of the political opposition. He helped start groups like the Union of Right Forces in 1999. This group was a coalition that wanted more democracy in Russia. He served in the State Duma, which is the lower house of Parliament. However, he became a very strong critic of President Vladimir Putin. Starting in the year 2000, he spoke out against the government. He believed the leaders were becoming too powerful and undemocratic. He also wrote many reports about corruption in the country.

Boris Nemtsov was very active in organizing public protests and rallies. He helped lead the Dissenters' Marches and the "For Fair Elections" rallies. He wanted to make sure that voting in Russia was fair for everyone. He also spoke out against the war in Ukraine. In 2008, he began publishing deep reports about how money was being used unfairly. He tried to show how this tied back to the President. Even when things were difficult, he continued to organize people. He used his own website to talk directly to the public.

Sadly, Boris Nemtsov was killed on February 27, 2015. This happened on a bridge near the Kremlin in Moscow. At that time, he was helping to organize a rally about the economy and Ukraine. He was also working on a report about Russian troops in eastern Ukraine. In 2017, a court found five men guilty for the crime. They had agreed to kill him for 15 million rubles. Many people in Russia still remember his work today. They hold marches to honor his memory and his ideas.
