society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Booing is a way to show you are unhappy. People yell "Boo!" and hold the sound out. They might also point their thumbs down.

In sports, fans boo many things. They might boo a player on the other team. They might boo their own team for playing poorly. Fans also boo referees for making bad calls. Some players say booing is hard. It can make them feel nervous or upset. For example, Ted Williams was booed a lot in baseball. This made him stop tipping his hat to fans.

Booing happens in the arts, too. In opera, it is common to boo. In 1913, people booed a famous music piece in Paris. It was called Le Sacre du Printemps. In 1964, the New York Philharmonic was booed during a show.

Some people think booing is useful. They say it rewards good work and punishes bad work. In British pantomime plays, the crowd is told to boo the bad characters. This helps everyone know who is the hero.
