Bok globule

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bok globules are dark clouds in space.

They are small, dark nebulae. A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust. These clouds are very cold. They are some of the coldest things in space.

Inside, they hold gas and dust. They have helium and hydrogen. They also have a little bit of silicate dust. These clouds can make new stars. They are like insect cocoons. This was a guess by Bart Bok. He and Edith Reilly made this idea in 1947.

It was hard to see inside them. The dark clouds block all visible light. In 1990, scientists used near-infrared light. This light helps us see inside. They found that stars are born there. Most of these clouds make two or more stars.

Some clouds have a special shape. Nearby hot stars hit them with light. This pulls the dust into a tail. We call these cometary globules.

Scientists still study these clouds today. They want to learn more about them.
