Born Walden Robert Cassotto on May 14, 1936, in Manhattan, he possessed a wide range of musical talents. By his teenage years, he could play the piano, drums, and guitar. He later added the harmonica and the xylophone to his repertoire. He adopted the stage name Bobby Darin to begin his professional recording career.

Darin's musical journey began with songwriting partnerships. In 1955, he met Don Kirshner at a Washington Heights candy store. Together, they wrote jingles and songs, including early bubblegum pop. After a period with Decca Records, Darin moved to Atlantic Records' Atco subsidiary. This move proved successful under the guidance of star-maker Ahmet Ertegun. In 1958, Darin co-wrote "Splish Splash" with radio DJ Murray Kaufman. The song was inspired by a suggestion from Kaufman's mother, Jean. This rock and roll single sold over one million copies and launched his career.

As his fame grew, Darin demonstrated his ability to handle complex musical styles. He wrote the multimillion-selling ballad "Dream Lover" in 1959. He then moved into jazz-pop with his famous cover of "Mack the Knife." This version of the Kurt Weill standard stayed at number one for nine weeks. It sold two million copies and won the 1960 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. That same year, he was named the inaugural winner of the Grammy for Best New Artist. He also achieved international recognition with his jazzy version of "Beyond the Sea."

In the 1960s, Darin expanded his reach into country music and film. He recorded several country hits for Capitol Records, such as "Things" and "18 Yellow Roses." He also worked in the film industry, appearing in the Disney soundtrack for "That Darn Cat!"

His acting career included a Golden Globe Award for the film "Come September." In this movie, he starred alongside actress Sandra Dee, whom he married in 1960. He also earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in "Captain Newman, M.D."

Darin's personal life involved significant challenges and secrets. He grew up believing his grandmother, Vivian "Polly" Fern Walden, was his mother. He believed his mother, Nina Cassotto, was actually his older sister. In 1968, Nina revealed the truth about his parentage, which deeply affected him. This revelation, combined with his presence at the Ambassador Hotel during the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, led to a period of seclusion. These heavy events occurred during a time when Darin was also becoming more politically active in Democratic campaigns.

Despite these hardships, Darin remained a dedicated performer. He made a successful comeback on television in the early 1970s.

He was aware of his physical vulnerabilities due to a weak heart. This knowledge drove him to use his musical talents intensely while he was young. He continued to work hard to share his craft with audiences even as his health declined.

Darin passed away in 1973 at the age of 37. He died in a Los Angeles hospital recovery room following open heart surgery. His life remains a notable example of an artist who refused to be confined to a single genre. From rock and roll to jazz and country, he constantly sought new ways to express himself. His ability to navigate the worlds of music, acting, and songwriting left a lasting mark on American culture.
