He was famous for a unique comedic delivery known as deadpan. This style involves remaining calm and serious while delivering jokes. He also incorporated a stammering technique into his routines. These methods helped him stand out in the world of entertainment. His gentle and witty approach earned him immense respect from audiences and peers alike.

Newhart's early success relied on a clever auditory mechanism. He specialized in comedic monologues where he acted as a "straight man." In these recordings, he would portray only one side of a conversation. He often pretended to be engaged in a telephone call. By reacting to an unseen person, he forced the listener to imagine the other speaker. This technique turned the listener into an active participant in the joke.

His rise to stardom began with groundbreaking comedy albums. In 1958, Newhart worked as an advertising copywriter in Chicago. He and a colleague recorded absurd telephone scenarios as audition tapes. After his partner left for New York, Newhart continued these recordings alone. His 1960 album, *The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart*, became a massive success. It was the first comedy album to reach number one on the Billboard pop album charts.

The album won two Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Best New Artist.

Newhart followed this success with several other notable albums. These included *The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!*, released just six months later. That album won a Grammy for Best Comedy Performance – Spoken Word. He released many more throughout the 1960s and 1970s. These included *Bob Newhart Faces Bob Newhart* and *The Windmills Are Weakening*. His ability to command the charts through audio alone changed modern comedy.

He eventually transitioned from audio recordings to television stardom. From 1972 to 1978, he starred in *The Bob Newhart Show*. In this sitcom, he played a Chicago psychologist named Robert Hartley.

In that show, he played a Vermont innkeeper named Dick Loudon. He earned three Primetime Emmy nominations for his work on that series.

Newhart's career also included significant work in film and voice acting. He appeared in movies such as *Catch-22* and the holiday film *Elf*. He also provided the voice for Bernard in Disney's *The Rescuers*. In later years, he joined the cast of *The Big Bang Theory*. He played Professor Proton from 2013 to 2018. This role earned him his first career Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. He even appeared in the spin-off series *Young Sheldon*.

Throughout his long life, Newhart received many prestigious honors. He earned three Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award. He also won a Golden Globe and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. He was born on September 5, 1929, in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 1952 with a degree in business management.
