He was known for a very special way of being funny. He used a deadpan style, which means he stayed very calm and serious. He also used a stammering style in his jokes. This helped him stand out from other performers. People loved his gentle way of making them laugh. He became one of the most respected names in comedy.

His comedy often worked like a puzzle for the listener. In his early audio recordings, he played the "straight man." This means he acted out only one side of a conversation. He usually pretended to be on a telephone call. He would listen to the other person and react. This made the audience imagine what the other person was saying. It was a clever way to tell a story using only his voice.

Newhart began his journey with comedy albums in the late 1950s. He worked as an advertising copywriter in Chicago first. He and a co-worker made funny recordings to show their talent. Eventually, he recorded his own routines alone. His first big hit was "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" in 1960.
