Before this, two major French banks named BNP and Paribas were separate. In 1999, these two banks were part of a complex battle on the stock market. BNP tried to buy Société Générale, but that bid failed. However, BNP's bid for Paribas was successful. This led to the two banks joining together on May 23, 2000. Since then, the bank has grown by buying many other institutions.

Over the years, the bank has expanded into many different countries. It bought Banca Nazionale del Lavoro in Italy in 2006. It also took over parts of Fortis Bank in Belgium and Luxembourg in 2008.
