First, the plant grows bell-shaped flowers that can be white, pink, or red. These flowers must be pollinated by insects to make fruit. The berries start out as a pale greenish color. Next, they change to a reddish-purple shade. Finally, they turn a uniform blue when they are ripe.

In the early 1900s, Frederick Vernon Coville and Elizabeth Coleman White studied these plants. They worked together in New Jersey to improve them. Coville discovered that blueberries need acidic soil to stay healthy. He also learned that they do not self-pollinate. By 1916, his work helped make blueberries a valuable crop. This research helped change how we grow them today.
