It first came out in New York City in September 1929. This was just before the stock market crashed. The magazine tells people about the world of work. It covers topics like money and politics. In the 1970s, it began to write for more people. It was not just for big bosses anymore. By 1975, it had more ads than any other magazine in the U.S.

In 2009, the magazine faced hard times. It was losing a lot of money. A company called Bloomberg L.P. bought it that year. They paid between $2 million and $5 million. They also took on the magazine's debts. This was a big change for the brand.

Since then, the magazine has changed many times. It has had many different leaders. In 2024, the magazine changed how often it comes out. It used to come out every two weeks. Now, it is a monthly magazine. It still tells important stories about the world of business.
