Blind Willie Johnson was a famous singer and guitar player. He was born in 1897 in Texas. He sang holy blues music. This is a style that uses blues sounds to share religious messages.

Willie had a very powerful voice. He also had great skill with the slide guitar. A slide is a tool used on the strings. Some say he used a knife to play. This made his guitar sound like it was moaning or singing along. One of his songs is called "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground." It is very famous.

Willie often sang on street corners. He tied a tin cup to his guitar to collect money. He made thirty recordings between 1927 and 1930. His music was so special that NASA sent it into space. They put his song on a probe in 1977.

Many musicians learned from his style. He is known as a master of the blues. People still listen to his music today.
